Composition
At the heart of this work stands a multi-colored tree, its trunk marked by time and experience, its roots exposed and spreading deeply into the earth below. Beside it rises a three-dimensional Inukshuk, built stone by stone, steady and intentional. The relationship between the two forms creates a quiet dialogue—organic growth paired with human-made guidance, nature and companionship existing side by side.
Color & Energy
The canopy bursts with a spectrum of colours—reds, blues, greens, yellows—suggesting the many seasons and emotional states we pass through in life. These vibrant hues are softened by touches of gold, lending warmth and reverence. The lower half of the painting grows heavier and more grounded, with darker earth tones anchoring the composition and providing visual stability.
Medium & Texture
Rich texture defines the surface. The roots are heavily worked and gilded, their tactile presence emphasizing depth, endurance, and permanence. Gold flecks appear throughout the branches and foliage, catching light gently and reinforcing the value of what lies beneath the surface. The sculptural Inukshuk introduces dimensionality, inviting the viewer to experience the painting not only visually, but physically.
Style & Story
Symbolic and contemplative, Rooted Kinship draws from both natural metaphor and cultural philosophy. The tree reflects the idea that relationships fall into different categories—some fleeting, some supportive for a time, and a rare few that nourish us at our core. The Inukshuk, inspired by Inuit tradition, stands as a marker of guidance and reassurance, quietly affirming that one is not lost.
Emotional Connection
This work resonates as a meditation on belonging. It speaks to the comfort of knowing there are people who remain present through every season—steady, grounding, and unwavering. Viewers often describe a sense of reassurance and quiet gratitude when engaging with the piece.
Context & Significance
Rooted Kinship reflects a mature exploration of connection—moving beyond surface-level relationships toward those that sustain us over time. By gilding the roots, the work emphasizes that what truly holds us is often unseen, built slowly, and deeply earned. It serves as a reminder that rooted relationships are not only rare, but profoundly precious.
Message from the Artist
A dear friend once shared a simple but powerful way of understanding relationships: some people are like leaves, present for a season; some are like branches, offering support until the weight becomes too heavy; and a rare few are roots—steady, nourishing, and essential.
That idea stayed with me and led me to think of Inukshuks—ancient stone markers built to guide, protect, and remind travelers that they are on the right path. In this painting, the tree carries the story of growth and cycles, while the Inukshuk stands as a quiet companion, offering reassurance without words.
I’ve covered the roots in gold because truly rooted relationships are invaluable. They hold us steady when life feels uncertain and remind us that we are never meant to walk alone.
May you have many rooted relationships in your life.
