Collector’s Notes
Composition
The surface unfolds as a layered field of fragments—images, symbols, and textual remnants arranged in a loosely structured mosaic. Nothing dominates the composition outright; instead, the eye moves organically across the canvas, discovering moments of clarity and areas of obscurity. This non-linear arrangement mirrors the way memory itself operates—associative, recursive, and deeply interconnected.
Color & Light
Muted neutrals form the foundation of the palette, punctuated by passages of brighter color that surface like recollections returning to consciousness. Some areas appear softened, partially veiled by paint, while others retain sharper contrast. Light is not uniform; it flickers across the surface, suggesting the way certain memories glow vividly while others recede into shadow.
Medium & Texture
Built through the integration of old photographs, maps, book pages, musical notation, and symbolic marks, the work possesses a richly tactile presence. Layers of paint alternately reveal and conceal these elements, creating a sense of temporal depth. The physical act of covering and uncovering becomes a metaphor for remembrance and forgetting—memory as something continuously edited by time.
Style & Story
Memories operates at the intersection of abstraction and narrative collage. Rather than depicting a specific moment, it reflects the architecture of remembrance itself. The inclusion of archival materials suggests lived experience, while their partial erasure speaks to impermanence. The work acknowledges memory as both gift and burden—capable of preserving joy, yet also of reopening wounds.
Emotional Connection
For the viewer, this piece often feels quietly intimate. It resonates through recognition: the way a scent, a sound, or a fragment of text can unlock an entire emotional landscape. Collectors may find themselves projecting their own histories into the work, allowing it to become a reflective surface for personal recollection and emotional inheritance.
Context & Significance
Created in 2017, Memories reflects a mature phase in the artist’s exploration of inner life and psychological depth. Referencing the condition of hyperthymesia—an inability to forget—the work contemplates the necessity of selective remembrance. In a culture increasingly obsessed with documentation and permanence, this piece offers a nuanced meditation on the value of letting go. For collectors, it stands as a contemplative object that evolves with time, gathering meaning as one’s own memories shift and deepen.
Message from the Artist
I’ve always been fascinated by memory—by how little control we seem to have over what stays with us and what fades away. Often, it’s only after an experience has passed that we understand its true significance. Feelings move through us quickly, but their memories linger, sometimes for a lifetime.
While working on this piece, I was thinking about how memories connect us—to people we’ve loved, moments we’ve survived, versions of ourselves we no longer are. I was also thinking about how heavy that ability can become. Reading about hyperthymesia made me realize that forgetting is not a flaw; it’s a mercy.
In this work, I layered fragments of photographs, maps, music, and text—pieces of lived experience—and allowed some to disappear beneath paint. It was my way of honoring both remembrance and release. To me, Memories is a reminder that what truly matters stays with us, and that letting the rest soften with time is part of healing.
