Collector’s Notes

Composition:
Two canvases join to depict a stormy seascape under a glowing, fiery sunset. Branches extend from opposite sides of the diptych — one dark, one white — where two small lovebirds perch closely together, their intimacy contrasting with the turbulence around them.

Symbolism:
Lovebirds are lifelong companions, celebrated for their loyalty and affection. Here, they embody resilience and devotion. Despite the surrounding chaos — crashing waves, snow, and the dusk of life’s journey — their togetherness creates a sanctuary. The imagery suggests that love provides shelter from hardship, enabling us to endure life’s storms.

Medium & Technique:
Built upon tissue paper and modelling clay, the work is rich with tactile texture. Waves ripple across the surface in layered acrylics, while the raised elements of the branches and birds draw attention to the fragility yet strength of love.

Style & Story:
This painting combines romantic symbolism with expressive abstraction, weaving emotional storytelling into textural depth. While reminiscent of the artist’s Respite (2011) with its themes of rest and companionship, Lovebirds leans more personal, intimate, and tender.

Emotional Connection:
Viewers are drawn into the warmth of the birds’ union despite the cold, tumultuous backdrop. It resonates as a meditation on enduring companionship, suggesting that shared love transforms adversity into beauty.

Context & Significance:
Created in 2010, this work continues the artist’s exploration of textured mixed media and symbolic storytelling. While Namaste (2010) celebrated auspicious beginnings, Lovebirds turned inward, toward intimacy and human connection. Together, they reflect a year of deep emotional and spiritual reflection in the artist’s journey.

Message from the Artist

With Lovebirds, I wanted to explore the way love can create a sanctuary even in the most difficult circumstances. The idea of these two birds, perched together against a backdrop of stormy seas, icy winds, and a fading sun, came to me as a metaphor for companionship that transcends hardship.

I used heavy textures and layered materials to create that sense of turbulence — choppy waves, swirling snow, and restless skies. But against all of that, the birds remain unshaken. Their intimacy, their simple closeness, became the heart of the painting. To me, they embody the way love can make us forget the chaos around us and root us in something steady.

This piece carries a personal truth for me: that life’s trials are inevitable, but they are also softened when we have someone to lean on. The lovebirds remind me that connection can turn even the harshest landscapes into places of warmth and belonging.
